Few days ago, Singapore Airlines selected me as one of the winners to attend the closing show of Audi Fashion Festival 2014 in Singapore and it happened to be the highly anticipated Oscar de la Renta fashion show. I was beyond ecstatic! They also allowed me to bring 3 friends along and we had backstage access and free hair-do by the same hair dressers who did the models hair. Old Hollywood glam! 18 May, 2014 evening was a night to remember! Thank you, Singapore Airlines!
The show by the fashion veteran and holder of the CFDA’s Lifetime Achievement Award closed the four-day Audi Fashion Festival, an international event now in its sixth year that features a mix of Asian designers and international stars. Having dressed some of the world’s most iconic style icons, such as Jacqueline Kennedy, Diane Vreeland, and Sarah Jessica Parker, there’s no denying that sophistication and elegance aren’t just part of Mr. de la Renta’s style credo, they are in his DNA.
Before the show began, the Dominican-born and New York City based designer Oscar de la Renta appeared on screen in a pre-recorded segment, apologizing for his absence while inviting guests to enjoy the catwalk show.
While the house of Oscar de la Renta is best known for its ball gowns, the first few looks from its Autumn-Winter 2014 collection showed the designer’s equal sartorial deftness for menswear-inspired clothing too.
It’s all about the details, from the bridal-inspired make-up to beautifully braided coifs as well as the matching accessories and shoes. Oriental-style embroideries of peonies, Japanese-inspired folds and draping were featured prominently on full skirts. Embroidered coats and big bows on colorful dresses, tulle on knee-length frocks and intricate beadwork on column dresses. There were over 60 looks altogether and a lot of special pieces that haven’t been seen on the runway before. Floor-length ball gowns in billowing taffeta and heavily embroidered silk duchesse held court in the runway like reigning queens; each passing frothy concoction eliciting gasps of appreciation and reverence from the crowd.
But no one could prepare themselves for the pièce de résistance of the night: two angelic flower girls making their way onto the runway to signal the arrival of the crown jewel piece of Oscar de la Renta Fall-Winter 2014 collection—the wedding dress.
And Kate Bosworth, wearing Oscar de la Renta golden jumpsuit closed the catwalk show, receiving flower bouquet together with Oscar de la Renta CEO and Oscar de la Renta’s daughter.
Oscar can really do no wrong.
